Meru North Tragedy. In the post-monsoon season, a three-man Japanese expedition led by Sohei Suzuki had a tragic end to their second attempt on Meru North. They had chosen a line of mixed snow and rock to the left of the original route on the northeast face. An avalanche buried the three climbers at 5600 meters. Two years ago they had attempted the same route but had to abandon the attempt as one of them accidentally dropped the bag containing the gas cartridges.
