South America, Argentina-Central Andes, Aconcagua and Cordón de la Plata Traverses

Aconcagua and Cordon de la Plata Traverses. In ten days, between February 17 and 27, the Mendoza guide Gabriel Cabrera traversed Aconcagua by climbing the Pirámide buttress (southwest ridge), south summit ridge and main summit. He descended the Glacier de los Polacos and then traversed along the base of the north side of Aconcagua to reach Plaza de Mulas and Puente del Inca. The same climber undertook in September a winter traverse. After bivouacking on the summit of Cerro de la Plata (5850 meters, 19,193 feet) he descended to the ridge of peaks that connects Plata with the Tres Mogotes group. He then accomplished a high-altitude traverse over twelve peaks over 16,500 feet, including several unclimbed lesser points. He then returned to Punta de Vacas by way of the Tupungato river valley.
