Asia, Nepal, Everest Southwest Face Winter Attempt

Publication Year: 1986.

Everest Southwest Face Winter Attempt. South Koreans led by Park Young- Bae tried to climb the Bonington route on the southwest face of Everest. The first winter attempt on this face was defeated by exhaustion of the climbers, their food and their replacement tents, a lack of climbing hardware and frequent bad weather with destructive winds. The highest point was 7700 meters, which Sherpas Pasang Dawa and Jimba Jimbu reached on January 13, 1986 and Koreans Kim Bo-Youl and Um Hong-Gil got to two days later. This was to be the site of Camp V, but no camp was actually pitched there.
