Iowa Mountaineers

Publication Year: 1985.

Iowa Mountaineers. The club completed another active year in 1984, with membership remaining at 1000. Nearly 300 members participated in one of the many instructional courses, the mountaineering camps, or the foreign expeditions that were from one to four weeks in length. The courses and mountain camps were again offered for University of Iowa credit, if desired. Under the instruction of Jim and John Ebert, 50 members finished the concentrated one- week basic rock-climbing courses held at Devils Lake State Park, Wisconsin, and 60 members completed the weekend rock-climbing courses offered to University of Iowa students. Three general weekend outings were held at Devils Lake with an average attendance of 70.

In January a group of 23 participated in a seven-day cross-country skiing trip to Yellowstone National Park. Mike Bogart and Jenny Hall from Salt Lake City did a fine job of leading this adventure.

The club sponsored three one-week Grand Canyon hiking trips in January, March, and June with over 80 participants led by Jim and Margie Ebert.

In July John and Jim Ebert led a group of 42 members and 12 climbing leaders to the European Alps. The group climbed in the most famous and scenic mountain regions in Europe that included Bavaria, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, and France. The weather was nearly perfect. Over 248 individual ascents were made on 17 peaks in five countries, including such classics as the Grossglockner, the Grosse and Kleine Zinnen, the Matterhorn, the Weisshom, and Mont Blanc. The climbing leaders included Robert Wilson, Jock Glidden, and Hans Steyskal from the United States, Dr. Milos Turek from Sweden, and six leaders from the Austrian Alpine Club.

During August a two-week mountaineering camp was held in the Sawtooths of Idaho with 55 people in attendance. Over 178 individual ascents were made on 10 peaks, including 25 on Warbonnet by four different routes and 20 on the Finger of Fate by four different routes. The weather was generally good with only a few afternoon thunderstorms.

In July 1985 the club will return to East Africa to ascend Kilimanjaro and to tour the many fascinating game parks. In August a two-week mountaineering camp will be held along the Banff-Jasper Highway to climb at least 10 of the most classic peaks beginning in the Bugaboos and extending to Mount Edith Cavell near Jasper. In January 1986 the club plans to return to New Zealand to climb Mount Cook (weather permitting) and six other peaks on the North and South Islands and to hike the Milford and Routeburn Tracks. In July 1986 it will return to climb in Peru, with Base Camp in Quebrada Quilcayhuanca.
