Langtang Lirung Attempt. An eight-man Canadian expedition led by Shaun Parent attempted to repeat the 1980 British route which started up a rib on the south face and continued up the face. They reached Base Camp at 13,125 feet on March 12. A high point of 20,800 feet was reached in the first summit bid by Don Serl and John Simpson on March 31. They pitched Camp III at this point. The next day an avalanche wiped out the camp and they retreated. A second summit try by Serl, Simpson and two other members got no higher than 18,200 feet on April 14 because of more snowfall which threatened to avalanche. The climb was abandoned on April 15 because of bad weather. The remaining members were tired or sick by then too.
