South America, Argentina—Central Andes, Aconcagua, South Face

Publication Year: 1984.

Aconcagua, South Face. For good reason the Messner route on the south face of Aconcagua is getting popular. At least ten Americans made it in February of 1983. After ten days on the face, Lars Holbrook, Keith Hadley, George? and Thomas? reached the summit on February 1. The latter had badly frostbitten feet. Our group, Geoff Radford, Chris Ellms, Bryan Becker, Dave Nettle, Dave Kellokoski and I, took five days and were on top on February 20. Radford, Ellms, Becker, and I had previously climbed the normal route to acclimatize. The following person is very helpful with information and arrangements: Luis Alberto Parra, Güiraldes 246, 5519 San José, Mendoza, Argentina. Telephone 24 20003.
