El Toro, West Side. On September 2, 1981, at the end of the southern winter, twelve Santiago climbers including two women, under the direction of Claudio Lucero, made the first ascent in modem times of the west side of Cerro El Toro (6386 meters, 20,950 feet). The mountain has been hitherto ascended only from Argentina (east side). South of El Toro and at the sources of the Choapa river, G. Henriquez and R. Lamilla made the first ascent of Cerro Proyecto (4724 meters, 15,500 feet), also located on the international border (January 1982).
