South America, Southern Peru, Salcantay

Publication Year: 1984.

Salcantay. Our team consisted of Michel Biodjekian, Jean-Paul and Geneviève Bouquier, Laurent and Evelyne Coursol, Maurice Gelman, Christian Genina, Albert Peret, Réné Tirollier, Alain Pascal, Bernard Hostein and me. In early July we all climbed Chuyunco (c. 5300 meters, 17,389 feet), which lies just east of Salcantay. Jean-Paul Bouquier, Hostein, Pascal and I climbed Salcantay from July 20 to 24 by its northeast ridge with camps at 4800, 5100, 5400 and 6100 meters. It was very dry and so we had much bare ice. We approached from Mollepata in three days. It might be better to approach from Quillabamba at Km 88 on the Machu Picchu railroad.
