A.A.C., Blue Ridge Section. In 1982 this smallest section of the Club was undoubtedly the most active in proportion to its size. Section-sponsored outings were held in the Potomac Gorge and at Seneca Rocks, West Virginia. Members also climbed in the Alps, California, the Sawtooth Range of Idaho, the Cascades, the Wind Rivers of Wyoming, the Canadian Rockies, and British Columbia. Meetings featured a wide variety of speakers including Al Rubin’s description of his experience on the Club’s exchange with Poland; Gaston Rébuffat’s film, Les Horizons Gagnés, (co-sponsored with the Union des Français à l’Étranger); and Doug Scott’s slides of three Himalayan expeditions (co-sponsored with the Smithsonian Resident Associate Program).

Conservation was also a major Section effort. Together with the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club, the Section sponsored the Carderock Conservation Project, chaired by Janet Young, which has put hundreds of hours of work into halting and reversing erosion at Washington’s nearest climbing area. Because of its location at the seat of government, the Section has assisted the Club’s Conservation and Use Committee in pressing to prevent clear cutting in the Menagerie climbing area in Oregon.

With the loss of officers Will Davis to the Alaska Section and Vivian Mendenhall to Australia, Francis Soges was elected treasurer and Joe Wagner secretary for the remainder of the year.
