Asia, Nepal, Manaslu

Publication Year: 1983.

Manaslu. We were Aldo Bonino, Christine Chapoutot, Marc Ferrari, Jacques Granjean, Jacques Sananes, Monique Vidaillac, Jacques Vuillemin, my wife Gilberte and I as leader. We were on the mountain from September 24 to October 14. We had camps at 17,050, 19,700 and 21,150 feet on the standard northeast-face route. In the dangerous zone between Camps I and II we found a safer route to the right of the séracs. Heavy snowfalls hampered us. On October 9 I left Camp III with the excellent Sherpa Ang Tensing (of Tibetan origin) and we bivouacked at 24,275 feet. On October 10 we set out at seven A.M. in high winds and cold. It was snowing above 23,950 feet. We reached the summit at noon and descended to Camp III in the afternoon.
