Cordillera Apolobamba, 1981. From July 10 to 12, 1981 Alberto Campanile, Giuseppe Pierantoni, Giambisi, Della Fina and I climbed the three main summits, P 5430 (17,815 feet), P 5380 (17,651 feet) and P 5340 (17,848 feet), in the long snow ridge between Paso Sanchez and Paso Riti. They were difficult snow-and-ice climbs. The local Indians call the region Macaro. We then moved to the 15,425-foot Peluchuco Pass and climbed the following peaks alpine style: Peluchuco Huaracha (5650 meters, 18,537 feet) via west ridge in ten hours by Giambisi, Pierantoni and me on July 18, 1981; Catantica (5530 meters, 18,143 feet) via west face in nine hours by Giambisi, Pierantoni, Della Fina and Campanile on July 20; and Macchu-Sutchi-Cuchi (5679 meters; 18,632 feet) by west face in eleven hours by all five of us on July 22.
