North America, United States, Alaska, Tordrillo Mountains Ski Traverse

Publication Year: 1983.

Tordrillo Mountains Ski Traverse. In late March and early April Mark Jonas** and I flew to Beluga Lake to begin the first 3-pin ski traverse of the Tordrillo Mountains. These stretch for over 100 miles from near Mount Spur to the Cathedral Mountains. Our route lay up the Triumvirate Glacier, across a major pass to the Hayes Glacier, over the Black and Tan Glacier and down the Skwentna River to Rainy Pass Lodge. We were to have ascended Moose Creek to the Cathedral Mountains. Unfortunately Jonas developed frostbite on his toes while crossing the Triumvirate-Hayes pass, which forced us to fly out from Rainy Pass Lodge, only 15 miles from our goal.
