Ganesh III Attempt. A joint Nepalese-Japanese expedition with twelve members was led by Shoji Imai. Originally they had permission for Ganesh I via its north ridge but recent border adjustments have put this route into Tibet and it is not available to climbers from the Nepalese side of the mountain. The Nepalese government proposed the southwest face, but the expedition believed this impossible. They then requested permission for the north ridge of Ganesh III (7132 meters, 23,400 feet). Base Camp was placed at 11,975 feet on September 13. They reached ahigh point of 18,375 feet. On October 9 Hiroshi Terui, Kaoru Kuroiwa and Masaru Mizuno were overwhelmed by an avalanche while descending from Camp I. The expedition was abandoned after a week of fruitless search for the three men.
