Rataban. A 16-member Indo-New Zealand team was led by Lieutenant Colonel Balwant Singh Sandhu and Graeme Dingle. They set up Base Camp on August 23 at the head of the Valley of Flowers. On September 2 Raymond John Button and Captain Lakha Singh reached the summit of Rataban (20,230 feet), followed on September 5 by Dingle, Chandra Prabha and Joan Stroker. Most of the expedition then ran 100 miles down the hazardous Alaknanda, Manakini and Ganges in fiberglass canoes.
