South America, Peru—Cordillera Blanca, Abasraju Attempt

Publication Year: 1979.

Abasraju Attempt. Rob and Peter Gilbert from Dartmouth College returned to the Cordillera Blanca, hoping to climb Abasraju, which they had previously attempted. Once again, they climbed to within a few hundred feet of the summit, the second time for this rope team. It ap peared that it would have been clear sailing from where they got to reach the summit after an icy and highly technical line up the southwest face to the ridge. However Peter developed pulmonary edema and the pair descended in the dark rather than to risk Peter’s life in a high-altitude bivouac.
