North America, Greenland, To the North Pole Solo

Publication Year: 1979.

To the North Pole Solo. The Japanese Naomi Uemura made a solo dog-team trip from Ellesmereland to the North Pole, which he reached on April 30. He was supported by aircraft which then airlifted him back to his base and then to the northern tip of Greenland to attempt a north- south traverse. Another Japanese expedition from Nihon University led by Kaneshige Ikeda also sledged to the North Pole by a route slightly east of Uemura’s. They set out on March 12 and three Japanese and two Eskimos got to the Pole on April 27.
