A.A.C., Oregon Section

Publication Year: 1976.

A.A.C., Oregon Section. At its winter dinner the Oregon Section hosted the Club’s officers and board members. The evening proved to be a memorable one because of the camaraderie generated between the veterans of previous K2 expeditions who were present and members of the forthcoming 1975 expedition. Galen Rowell provided the framework with his narrative presentation, “K2—Past and Present,” beginning with the attempts of the Duke of the Abruzzi and concluding with the preparations of the current team. At the appropriate places in his presentation Galen deferred to Dee Molenaar, who gave a moving summary of the 1953 expedition, and to Bill Hackett, who described his 1960 attempt and who voiced the sentiments of the assembled company in wishing the expedition Godspeed.

At the spring dinner, Section members Bob Hyslop and Joe Throop told of their explorations on the west side of Mount Deborah, preparatory to a concerted summit bid by a new route this summer. At the fall dinner we returned to the Karakoram with a talk by Eric Shipton.

A committee of the Section, chaired by Jack Grauer, developed recommendations concerning proposed developments of the Timberline Lodge ski area on Mount Hood which were forwarded to the Forest Service.

The Section was saddened this year by the untimely loss of its former chairman, Carmie Dafoe, Jr.
