This reprint of Mummery’s famous book is an unabridged republication of the second edition as it was published in 1896. Long a classic in mountaineering literature, it now becomes available again without the bother of trying to locate a second-hand copy. The text is an exact copy of the original as are the illustrations, both the drawings and the photographs. The text is clear and well printed. The pictures compare favorably with what was published three-quarters of a century ago. There is little need to review the subject material, which is well known to all mountaineers.

The publishers hope that this will be the first in a series of reprints of mountain books which are now very hard to find. They hope to bring out such works as the account of the ascent of Minya Konka: Men Against the Clouds, the attempt on K2: Five Miles High and other such works.
