A.A.C., Oregon Section

Publication Year: 1975.

A.A.C., Oregon Section. Section activity continues to center around the four dinner meetings which are held quarterly. Chairman Carmie Dafoe gave an account of his expedition to Aconcagua, with an interesting analysis by Dr. Shults of the University of Oregon Medical School of the results of retinal examinations conducted on the climb by Dr. James Petroske. At the spring dinner, Dr. Herbert Curl of Oregon State University spoke on snow algae. In the fall, Jim Petroske narrated the first ascents which he made in British Columbia with Nick Dodge and Gary Kirk. At the last meeting President Putnam was present to show his films of climbing in the Shawangunks and the Bugaboos.

A Section committee composed of Nick Dodge, George Cummings, Lewis McArthur, and Gary Kirk represented climbers in successful negotiations with the State Parks Department regarding plans for camping areas and a bridge at Smith Rocks State Park, an important rock climbing area in central Oregon, where problems of access and conservation are closely joined.
