South America, Peru—Cordillera Central, Tatatunshu and Pachancoto

Publication Year: 1975.

Tatatunshu and Pachancoto. Andreas Brückner, Caspar Vogel, Mark Ebneter and I climbed in the Cordillera Central in July before going to Huascarán. We made the fourth ascent of Pachancoto (18,537 feet) by the northwest face, possibly a new route, on July 14. Our route was easier and less dangerous than the north face, which has been climbed twice. It was all snow, with neither ice nor rock. We also climbed Tatatunshu. Our altimeters would seem to indicate that Azulcocha was about 4600 meters (15,092 feet) rather than 4450 meters, as indicated on the German map of 1967.
