STEVEN ANTHONY McANDREWS

1950-1973

(Steven McAndrews was applying for membership in the American Alpine Club, but he was tragically killed on Fitz Roy in Patagonia before he could be taken in. The following is an excerpt from what was written by a close friend and a companion on his last climb.)

Steve the poet, the kayakist, the cowboy, the climber. He could put the passion of his being into whatever he was doing and do it far better in a short time than those who had been doing it all their lives. He worked at life: to know it and enjoy it. And he found the mountains and began to excel there too. It was beautiful to watch him move on rock, moving with boldness that came from assuredness and confidence.
