Iowa Mountaineers

Publication Year: 1974.

Iowa Mountaineers. It was another very active year for the Iowa Mountaineers, with many of our 450 members climbing in the Canadian Rockies and in Alaska. Weekend climbing courses were provided to some 60 University of Iowa students for course credit. The club sponsored 15 weekend climbing and hiking outings with from 20 to 70 members participating. Thirteen color adventure-film lectures were sponsored as a community service and to obtain additional operating funds for the club’s outdoor program. The annual banquet in April attracted 125 members from seven states. S. John Ebert, club president, showed his Peruvian film on the “before and after” areas of the 1969 earthquake and the club’s 1972 ascents of Huascarán and Chopicalqui.

Seven members made a 10,000-mile trip to Alaska by car to camp, hike, and climb under the leadership of S. John and Jim Ebert. A 16 member group enjoyed 11 perfect days at Berg Lake in Mount Robson National Park. Most of the group climbed five major peaks in the area, with four of them ascending Mount Robson. Jim Ebert served as leader with assistance from Harold Walton and guide Herman Frank. A 60- member camp was held in Mount Assiniboine Park, British Columbia, near Lake Magog. Eleven peaks were climbed with 17 climbers reaching the top of Mount Assiniboine. Jim Ebert was leader with assistance from Harold Goodro and guides Harvey T. Carter and Hans Schwarz. The year was climaxed with a week of winter camping, survival training, and cross-country skiing on Tennessee Pass in Colorado’s Collegiate Range, with 31 members participating under Jim Ebert’s leadership.

The 1974 foreign expedition will be to East Africa July 12-August 2. There will also be two other major outings, one to the Beartooth Range in Montana July 22-August 2 and the second to the French Military Range in British Columbia August 5-16.
