Colorado College Mountain Club

Publication Year: 1974.

Colorado College Mountain Club. The club was greatly saddened by the death of its president, Dale Watkins, in a rock climbing accident. A former president of the Purdue Outing Club, Dale was a fine climber who inspired the club with his own special brand of enthusiasm. He will be sorely missed.

The club accomplished a number of major ascents as well as expanding its regular climbing schools and slide lecture series. After a first attempt was snowed off, Curt Haire and Russ Hotchkiss made the first winter ascent of the north face of Blanca Peak. The route comprised some 3000 feet of high-angle snow climbing interspersed with F6 rock work and a face bivouac. Curt also climbed the Diamond on Longs Peak, although not without difficulties. Other ascents during the year included Wyoming’s Devils Tower, Lone Eagle, a winter ascent of Sneffels, and an ascent of the Black Ice Couloir in the Tetons with the Purdue Outing Club, as well as some severe technical ice climbs in Boulder and Cheyenne Canyon.
