Appalachian Mountain Club

Publication Year: 1974.

Appalachian Mountain Club. As in the past, club members participated in mountaineering endeavors throughout the world. Perhaps some of the most noteworthy rock climbing both in the U.S. and the British Isles has been that performed by Henry Barber. Closer to home, new summer and winter climbs are being done on Katahdin in Maine. Exploratory trips are finding interesting rock and ice climbing areas. Hopefully, the use of nuts will keep these areas from becoming piton scarred.

The beginners’ training program is continuously under review. Participation in the beginning rock climbing program or other rock climbing experience is now required by the Boston chapter as a prerequisite to snow and ice climbing instruction. The New York chapter has achieved a record 50-60% retention rate by limiting beginnning rock climbing classes to 15 students per session and by providing a 2-to-l student-to- instructor ratio.
