A.A.C., Sierra Nevada Section

Publication Year: 1974.

A.A.C., Sierra Nevada Section. The Section has had another active year, hosting four evening meetings, a fall dinner meeting at Director Raffi Bedayn’s home, and our now traditional spring meeting in Yosemite. Broad membership participation in Club affairs was demonstrated at these meetings through open discussion of proposed Board actions and resolutions to the Board emphasizing the Section’s point of view. The Section also continued to work with the National Park Service to find solutions to the problems associated with the Climbers’ Campground in Yosemite.

Programs at the section meetings were given by Gary Ullin and Kurt Wehbring on a new route on Mount St. Elias, Henry Kendall and Bill Oldfield on ice-piton design and the art of “camming”, and Curt Chadwick and Mike Warburton on various climbs in Yosemite Valley and the high country of the Sierra Nevada. At our Yosemite meeting, Dennis Hennek and NPS Ranger Pete Thompson presented two slide lectures to an audience of over 250 people. Thompson discussed the 1972 El Capitan rescue, while Hennek described his 1971 and 1972 expeditions to Baffin Island.

Officers elected by the Section for 1973-1974 are: Leigh Ortenburger, Chairman; Kurt Wehbring, Vice-Chairman; and David H. Coward, Sec- retary-Treasurer. At year’s end, the section membership stood at 128.
