Stanford Alpine Club
Stanford Alpine Club. The club’s activities for the 1971 spring quarter were hampered unfortunately by the wetness of the weather. Nevertheless, trips to Yosemite Valley and Pinnacles National Monument were undertaken, and several one-day practice climbs at the rocks and slabs nearby in the Santa Cruz mountains were held.
Activities usually perk up with the fall quarter, and this year was no exception. We started off with a beginners’ practice climb at Castle Rock State Park to instruct newcomers in the basic climbing techniques. Our first outing was to Tuolumne Meadows, where we were fortunate enough to have beautiful fall weather. Unfortunately, two later outings to Yosemite Valley were limited in activity owing to poor weather. A few IV’s were climbed during the fall, but the weather proved too unstable to permit any major achievements.
Two slide lectures were presented. Our member, Greg Donaldson, showed slides of his trip to Devil’s Thumb in Alaska’s Coastal Range. Leigh Ortenburger related his experiences with Hillary’s 1961 Makalu expedition.
