Alaska Alpine Club

Publication Year: 1972.

Alaska Alpine Club. The format of recent years was followed in 1971 with the continuation of weekly lunch meetings and monthly slide shows. These shows featured everything from caving through white- water expeditions in the Brooks Range to climbing in New Zealand, and were highlighted by an account of the first ascent of Mount Hayes via the east ridge. The club also continued to sponsor basic climbing classes which this year emphasized techniques for safe glacier travel. Our journal, Descent, has now been published for three years. It is available gratis to our members and to interested organizations. Thethird annual Glacier Stampede, an overnight ski trip, overwhelmed the club with more than 240 people camping near the Canwell Hut some eight miles up the Canwell Glacier from the Richardson Highway. Special accomplishments this year included the publication of a 16x17- inch sketch map of the Delta Mountains, target area for most modest climbing trips out of Fairbanks, and the emplacement of the club’s third hut approximately 13 miles up the Canwell Glacier.
