Wisconsin Hoofer Mountaineers. Besides the instructional trip every Sunday to Devils Lake, 40 miles north of Madison, many of our members take frequent outings to the “Lake” and other climbing areas. During the year many new high standard multi-pitch climbs were made on the sandstone bluffs at Gibralter Rock, 25 miles north of Madison. There were two club trips to the Boulder, Colorado area, and various members visited the Big Horns, Wind Rivers, Tetons, Cascades, Yosemite, Sawtooths, Olympics, and Devils Towsr.
For first ascents, Roger Zimmerman and Tom Dunwiddie climbed Man of War on Ship’s Prow Pillar, east of Sentinal Turret in Death Canyon in the Tetons. On the south side of Sentinel Turret, Dave and Jim Erickson climbed Dooms Day Dihedral. Among several of their first ascents in the Big Horns, Peter Cleveland and Roger Wiegand climbed Shipsprow on the east wall of Penrose Canyon between Penrose Peak and the Seven Brothers.
In the spring several members wrote and published the Climber’s and Hiker’s Guide to Devils Lake, which describes about 400 routes on the east side of the Lake, the geology, and some hikes in the area.
