University of Wyoming Outing Club

Publication Year: 1971.

University of Wyoming Outing Club. Last spring the activities of the club, under the able leadership of Gary Pouch, included several noteworthy events. Among them was the second winter ascent of the Medicine Bow Diamond by J. Halfpenny, T. Warren, N. Westlund, J. Mathiesen, and M. Parker. Twenty-two climbers attended the spring climb on Devils Tower. Cavers found adventure on a four-day underground expedition into Big Horn Caverns. In July Rex Hoff and Gale Long put two new routes up Cloud Peak in the Big Horn Range.

We were off to a fast start in the fall with the annual Teton Rendezvous. Next came the rock climbing school. Thanks to the fine direction of Jan Mathiesen and his six principal instructors, the school graduated 120 aspiring rock artists. Two trips to Boulder gave 50 beginners a chance for scrambling on the Flatirons. Backpackers and mountaineers ranged into Colorado and Montana hitting Longs Peak, Clark’s Peak, and Laramie Peak. Cavers, led by Joe Mueller and Wayne Sutherland, continue to make new discoveries in Wyoming. By year end Tom Ruhkla had started his schools in ski touring and ski mountaineering. The club is very strong and is planning great activities for the future.
