Colorado Mountain Club. The rapid growth of the club continues with an increase of 25% during the year to over 3500 members. Hundreds of one-day and weekend trips serve the recreational needs of the members, organized into some 12 local groups. Increased pressure has called for changes in the management of the larger climbing schools. These schools are being extended by technical climbs and practice sessions throughout the summer. The program of state outings is being transferred to a permanent Outing Committee, and the number of outings is to be increased. In 1970 the three in-state outings were supplemented by a climbers’ outing in the Gannett region of the Wind Rivers and a canoe camping outing in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Local groups also supported extended outings such as a float trip on the Green and Yampa Rivers and backpacking through the Wind River Range. An outing in the Tetons in early July was very hospitably accommodated at the new Grand Teton Climbers Ranch, sponsored by the American Alpine Club. We continue to be gratified by our fine record of safety, and were saddened by the loss of two members on a non-club outing in the Elk Mountains. Our new Climber’s Guide to the Colorado Mountains has been published and is now available. The schedule of conservation-exploration trips has been expanded to give members more direct contact with the areas of concern in Colorado. Much attention is going to the proposals for Wilderness areas within the state. The seventh annual Colorado Open Space Symposium was held in Denver to reach a new group of participants.
