Chicago Mountaineering Club

Publication Year: 1969.

Chicago Mountaineering Club. During the past year considerable effort was spent improving the club’s safety program. We are constantly modifying this program to make it more effective and more easily understood. Climbing in our local practice areas at Devils Lake and Mississippi Palisades is becoming more severe, and climbs that were unheard of a few years ago have now become routine. For this reason, the club has decided to recast completely the climbing guide which we plan to publish and to include as many of the newer routes as possible. The club did not have a major outing this year, although, as usual, individual members were active in various remote areas. Several members climbed in the Wind Rivers in Wyoming near Lonesome Lake and Maes Lake. Don and Gwen Simpson traveled to the Mountains of the Moon in East Africa. Frances Mullen drove a specially outfitted camper from Le Havre, France, to Katmandu, Nepal, with many stops for climbing and hiking en route, with the last part of the trip including a trek to Thyangboche near the foot of Mount Everest. The club’s 1969 outing will be held in the Grenadier Range in Colorado.
