Asia, U.S.S.R., Climbs in the Pamirs, 1967
Climbs in the Pamirs, 1967. Soviet climbers celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Russian Revolution by holding a mass climbing camp in the Pamirs. In all, 301 climbers from U.S.S.R., Austria, Yugoslavia, East Germany, Italy, Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Poland climbed Pik Lenin (23,407 feet). (The climbs by the Austrians were reported in A.A.J., 1968, 16:1, pp. 230-1). The highest peak in the U.S.S.R., Pik Kommunizma (24,590 feet), was climbed twice. A. Kustowski’s group made the first ascent of the northeast spur and face. The second and third ascents were made of the difficult northwest face of Pik Revoljuzija (22,881 feet) in the southwestern Pamirs. The first traverse of Pik Pobjeda (24,407 feet) was accomplished. Details of these and other notable ascents are given in Alpinismus of March, 1968.
