A.A.C., Sierra Nevada Section. Membership in the section increased during the year to 68, a new record. Four meetings were held, and the following excellent programs were given: the astonishing ascent and tragic descent of the east face of Mount Huntington by Don Jensen; an exploratory expedition to the Hindu Kush of Afghanistan by George Barnes; an absorbing resumé of ten years of climbing in the Bella Coola range of British Columbia by George Whitmore; and the dramatic movie taken on a climb of the Salathé Wall of El Capitan in Yosemite by Allen Steck. Climbing activity by members during the year included several important climbs in Yosemite, and participation in expeditions to the Cathedral Spires of the McKinley region in Alaska, to Yerupajá in the Cordillera Huayhuash, and to the Cordillera Blanca. The death of John Harlin, whose climbing originated in northern California, during the final stages of the successful direct climb of the north face of the Eiger was especially regretted by those section members who had known and climbed with him. The section welcomed the visits of mountaineers from other lands, including Eric Shipton, Gaston Rébuffat, Tom deBooy, and two French climbers, Jacques Dupont and André Gaunt, who were the first Europeans to succeed on El Capitan. And it is a pleasure to record here the presentation of the Wagner Award of the California Historical Society to Francis Farquhar for his superb, recently published History of the Sierra Nevada. The section has begun preparations for the annual dinner of 1967, which will be held in Berkeley.
