Iowa Mountaineers. The club celebrated its 25th anniversary in 1964 and sponsored its 34th major outing or expedition without a single fatality or hospital accident. The annual banquet in April was attended by 140 members from six states and presented Tom Hornbein as its featured speaker. The club’s training programs for young climbers was continued. Twelve week-end climbing outings were sponsored as well as 10 strenuous conditioning hikes. Seventeen professional adventure film- lectures were presented with an average attendance of 540 persons.

The 1964 European Alpine Outing led by John Ebert attracted 33 participants, of whom 30 were active climbers. Eighteen major mountains were ascended, mostly by traverse, in Bavaria, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, France, and Yugoslavia. Peaks ascended by difficult routes or under poor conditions included the Predigtstuhl, Grossglockner, Kabling, and Reichenstein in Austria, the Kleine and Grosse Zinnen and Langkofel in Italy, the Matterhorn and Mönch in Switzerland, Mont Blanc in France, and Triglav in Yugoslavia.

A 12-day summer camp was held in the Canadian Rockies in August. The camp, located at Corral Creek near Lake Louise, attracted 41 climbers under Hans Gmoser’s leadership. The campsite provided easy access to many peaks in the surrounding region. Nineteen major peaks were ascended including Aberdeen, Bowlen, Tower of Babel, Cory, Eisenhower, Fairview, Fay, Hector, Lefroy, Louis, Mitre Peak, Temple, Victoria, and Whyte.

The club will sponsor two major outings in 1965. A group of 45 plans to climb in the Quebrada Ishinca in Peru’s Cordillera Blanca in July and August, and 50 members will attend a climbing camp in the Sawtooths of Idaho, August 9-22.
