A.A.C., Sierra Nevada Section

Publication Year: 1964.

A.A.C., Sierra Nevada Section. At our five meetings in 1963, we had the following talks and pictures — Boyd Everett: the first ascent of Mount McKinley’s southeast spur; Leif-Norman Patterson: the first ascent of Tullparaju in the Cordillera Blanca in Peru; Gino Solda’s film of the Cima Ovest and Richard Hechtel’s slides of the Dolomites; Dick Irvin: the 1963 Colorado Mountain Club camp in the Cordillera Blanca; and Will Siri: the 1963 Mount Everest Expedition.

Many section members were enthusiastic about the National Climbing Classification System, which is intended to provide a common grading system for climbing throughout the country. They were therefore disappointed when the Sierra Club decided not to use it in its new Yosemite climbing guide. The Section welcomed the Club’s new policy of instituting lowered dues for outstanding but impecunious climbers, and it feels that the talents and viewpoints thus attracted are valuable to the Club. The Section extended its best wishes to the new Southern California Section, whose numerous members had in practice been unable to participate in our San Francisco area activities.
