The Alpine Club of Canada
The Alpine Club of Canada. The main Club activities for the year 1962 were, of course, the Spring Ski Camp and the Summer Climbing Camp. The Ski Camp was held in the Little Yoho Valley with the Club’s Stanley Mitchell Hut as headquarters. Due to the lateness of Easter and poor snow conditions attendance was not as great as anticipated. When Easter falls late in the Spring it has been recommended that Ski Camp be advanced a month or so, so as to take advantage of better snow conditions. The Summer Camp was held at Maligne Lake in Jasper National Park from July 14 to 28, with 219 members and friends in attendance. The large attendance was no doubt due to the easy method of arriving at camp, by bus and boat. The weatherman did not co-operate the first week, as we had rain, which meant snow at the higher levels. However, the second week was perfect, and a large number of trips were completed. A total of 89 trips were scheduled with only 18 having to be cancelled for various reasons. Climbs were made of Brazeau, Coronet, Charlton, Julian, Llysfran, Henry MacLead, Mary Vaux, Moffatt, Monkhead, Replica, Samson and Unwin. The last day of camp dawned fine and clear, but before the day was over, one of the stormiest afternoons developed with torrential rain, hail and wind. The boats were flung on the beach and general chaos reigned while all hands turned out to hold the dining and cook tents from being blown down.
The weather was generally poor this year in the Rockies, which hindered many independent parties from attaining their objectives.
