Alpenbock Climbing Club. The year 1962 was a busy one for the Alpenbock Climbing Club, which is located in Salt Lake City, Utah. Close to home, late snows permitted several cross-country ski tours as late as May 30 in the Alta area, and considerable climbing was done throughout the summer and fall in Alta Canyon. The area offers fine granite climbing and has many good practice climbs. A rough guide has been compiled of the various climbing routes in this area. In late April a first ascent of The Thumb was made after five unsuccessful attempts. In March, Ralph Tingey, Dave Wood, and Milt Hokanson made an ascent of Shiprock in New Mexico. Other members were in the Tetons and the Wind Rivers of Wyoming, where they climbed Lester, Helen, Fremont, and Woodrow Wilson. Fred Beckey was responsible for sparking much interest in the excellent climbing in Utah’s Lone Peak Basin, where several weekends were spent and four new routes placed.

The club held a safety seminar in December. This was a successful session which will become a semi-annual affair. All phases of climbing safety were covered in an effort to make all in attendance, whether club members or not, more safety-minded. We regard this seminar as the most important club accomplishment of 1962.
