A.A.C., Sierra Nevada Section

Publication Year: 1963.

A.A.C., Sierra Nevada Section. The section held four meetings in 1962. On February 9 Richard Hechtel showed spectacular slides of the Cordillera Blanca in Peru. His expedition the previous summer climbed Chopicalqui by a new route, made the first ascent of Nevado Ulta, and nearly reached the summit of unclimbed Ocshapalca. On March 9 George Wallerstein and Don Monk described the first ascents of Mounts Slaggard and McCauley in 1959 and Mount McArthur in 1961, all three peaks in the Saint Elias Range of the Yukon. Hillary’s Makalu expedition and the ascent of Ama Dablam were described by Leigh Ortenburger on May 25. At the fall meeting on November 17, Evelio Echevarría showed beautiful slides of the Cocuy and Santa Marta Ranges in the Andes of Columbia. Several members are going to the Himalayas with Dyhrenfurth’s 1963 Everest Expedition, and they described the progressing preparations at several meetings. The section is particularly interested in the A.A.C.’s proposed equipment testing project and hopes that the Club will encourage hardware manufacturers to self-impose higher standards of quality control.
