South America, Chile, Southern Patagonian Icecap

Publication Year: 1963.

Southern Patagonian Icecap. A group of the Associación Universitaria de Andinismo has just completed on January 15, 1963 a round-trip crossing of the Southern Patagonian Icecap. They left Punta Arenas at the end of November and were taken to their departure point in Exmouth Fjord by the Chilean Naval Patrol Ship Lientur. After crossing the whole glacial system, they reached Argentine territory at the Laguna Eléctrica near FitzRoy. From there they continued back across the Southern Icecap. Dr. Alvaro Yañez, Geologist Ceodomir Marangunic and Army Captain René Martínez, Professor Eduardo García, leader, made up the group. It had as objectives the crossing and the locating of new peaks and others which had been glimpsed in the 1961 crossing. They succeeded in taking very clear pictures of the Volcán Lautaro.
