South America, Peru, Chilean Reconnaissance in the Cordillera Huayhuash

Publication Year: 1963.

Chilean Reconnaissance in the Cordillera Huayhuash. Five climbers affiliated with the Federación de Andinismo took part in an expedition of reconnaissance and exploration in the Cordillera Huayhuash. Our specific mission was to locate a mountain range into which to send at a future date a skilled group with sufficient time and money to carry out an Andean season. The group, composed of Gastón Muga Royo, Raúl Araya Secaira, Mario Puig del Río, Germán H. Mills and me, spent from August 6 to the 25th in Peru. We explored to the Ninakocha (lake), passing through Chiquián, Llamac, Pocpa, Portezuelo de Cacanan and Cuartelguay. We made the first ascent of a peak of 15,750 feet between the passes of Cacanan and Kasha Punta, which we called Chilegirca. The Huaraz porter, Marcelino Morales, accompanied us on this ascent.
