North America, United States, Washington, Olympic Mountains, New Climbs in the Sawtooth Range

Publication Year: 1963.

New Climbs in the Sawtooth Range. The west face of “Castle Spires” was climbed by Keith Spencer and Art Filion via gullies and chimneys to a heather patch, followed by cracks and ribs to the summit. Though moderate, the exposure and lack of belay points make it advisable to take pitons. The west face of “Alpha” was ascended in mid-July by Jeff Duenwald and Jerry Koch starting from a ledge north of the Cruiser- Alpha col. Ledges and open chimneys lead to mid-face, where an extremely long high-angle pitch followed by more moderate pitches lead to the summit. Hard hats are recommended.
