M.ount Challenger, West Peak. The first ascent of this peak was made by Ellie Street, Fred Beckey and me on July 14 from a Base Camp on Challenger Arm by angling across and up the Challenger Glacier to the west ridge of the peak. We ascended very rotten rock just west of a prominent snow finger to gain the ridge crest. A rappel into the notch above the snow finger was followed by easy class-3 scrambling up to the rock summit. The rotten rock we encountered when climbing to the ridge could have been avoided by circling around the west ridge and then climbing a south- side gully to the notch. We descended by this route.
