Mountaineers. The 1961 activities of the Seattle Mountaineers may be summarized as follows. The annual climbing course began February 15 with 222 basic and 39 intermediate students registered. Of these, 98 basic and 13 intermediate students graduated on October 20 after a course of nine field trips. The belaying practice was held at the Mountaineers’ Rhododendron Preserve for the first time.

Sixty experienced climbs and nine intermediate ones were scheduled by the club with only three cancelled and six unsuccessful in completing their objectives. Six seminars were held including an ice climbing seminar on Nisqually Glacier at Mount Rainier and a new one this year, a compass course seminar consisting of three lectures and a two-day field trip.

The highly successful climbers’ outings were held in the Mount St. Elias area in Alaska in June and at Mount Robson in August. The annual club outing went to Yoho Park in British Columbia.
