Colorado Mountain Club

Publication Year: 1962.

Colorado Mountain Club. All groups of the club report an active year. Unfortunately, some of the scheduled trips were curtailed and even cancelled by the unusually wet year in Colorado. This was particularly true on the Labor Day week-end when the whole state was blanketed by a heavy snow that made high climbing impossible. Two outings were held in July, one in the Mount Zirkel-Dome Peak wilderness area on the west side of the Park Range in northwestern Colorado. About 60 people were attracted to this beautiful area. The out-of-state outing in the Dinwoody Creek valley of the Wind River Range in Wyoming offered sufficient snow, ice, and rock opportunities to an enthusiastic roster of 33 climbers. Five club members joined the Iowa Mountaineers’ expedition to the Cordillera Blanca in Peru.

Three thousand ponderosa pine seedlings were planted under the direction of the Forest Service in the Arapahoe National Forest on the club’s annual tree planting. The Pikes Peak group also devoted a day to tree planting in the Pike Forest.

Climbing schools were conducted by the Boulder, Pikes Peak, Fort Collins, and Denver groups. Over 150 people registered for the Denver school, which Jack Reed directed.

The Colorado Mountain Club will be 50 years old in 1962, and plans are under way to commemorate the anniversary by a series of special events that should appeal to the membership and to our visitors. We hope to interest the general public more and more in the activities and objectives of our club.
