Publication Year: 1962.

A.A.C., Cascade Section. The section held four meetings during the year. Programs included an account of an ascent of Mount Waddington by Neal Jacques, and on another occasion pictures of the first ascent of the north face of Mount Baring in the Cascades by Ed Cooper and the Wickersham Wall on Mount McKinley by Don Gibson. A summer picnic meeting was highlighted by the attendance of Club President Bob Bates and his wife Gail. About 95 members and guests attended the annual dinner meeting, at which John Breitenbach gave an illustrated account of his climb of the western rim of the South Face of Mount McKinley. At the annual meeting Lloyd Anderson was elected chairman of the Cascade Section.

With exceptionally good weather in the Pacific Northwest there was considerable activity among the members. Fred Beckey made several first ascents and new routes, including the north face of Edith Cavell in Jasper Park, North Wilson Glacier on Mount Adams, the east and west faces of the south tower of Howser in the Bugaboos, the north face of Mount Sir Donald in the Selkirks, and the Priest in Utah. Ken Carpenter made a first ascent of the southwest ridge of Formidable and climbed a new route on Mount Adams which he calls the Crater Route. Ed Cooper made first ascents on the east face and on Lava Ridge of Mount Adams, the east face of the middle peak of Mount Index, the north face of Cascade Peak, the direct face of Squamish Chief on Howe Sound, and the east face of Chimney Rock in the southern Selkirks of Idaho.
