LULIE NETTLETON 1877-1960

Miss Lulie Nettleton was born in Minneapolis, graduated from the University of Minnesota, moved to Seattle in 1901, and lived there until her death on February 7, 1960. Her long life was one of outstanding service in three fields: education, national war service and outdoor recreation.

She joined the Mountaineers in 1907, a month after its founding, and became a member of the American Alpine Club in 1915.

As an educator she became principal of the Green Lake School and was chosen president of the Seattle Grade Teachers Association.

Though she was very modest about it, she had climbed extensively in the Pacific Northwest and in the Alps. She had great literary ability. A poem she had written years earlier, "A Mountaineer’s Reverie,” was published in the 1956 Mountaineer. She loved the mountains and devoted much of her time on outings to the assistance of new and old climbers. Her happy disposition and pleasant way of life endeared her to all who knew her.
