Escape to Switzerland

Publication Year: 1946.

Escape to Switzerland, by G. R. de Beer. 8vo., 159 pages. London and New York: Penguin Books, 1945. Ninepence.

This book, written in 1943 and produced while the author was serving in Germany with the Grenadier Guards, continues his historical studies already presented in Early Travellers in the Alps. Colonel de Beer in civil life is reader in embryology at University College, London. His new volume covers a wide range: Alpine Analogies and Mountain Metaphors, Switzerland in Winter, Alps and Art, Alps in Music, The First Englishman on the Scheidegg, Shelley at Chamonix. The chapter on Bourrit is the result of enormous research, and the bibliographies offer much unfamiliar material.
