During World War II an amazingly high percentage of the members of the American Alpine Club were actively engaged in the Armed Forces, while most of the other members shared wartime civil and administrative responsibilities connected with the nation’s military effort. If accounts of all these wartime experiences could be gathered into one volume, the collection would be singularly impressive, but as such an accumulation is not practical, the Club has wished to record at least a cross-section of members’ wartime activities involving either mountains or use of a background of mountain knowledge. This special number, brief as it is, with articles by less than a dozen men, is meant to represent not merely those whose names appear as contributors, but all members of the American Alpine Club who gave wartime service to their country.
